Town Crier

Town Crier

At one time, the Town Crier was a vital figure in communities across Britain. Long before newspapers, radio, or social media, criers were the trusted voice of the people—proclaiming royal edicts, local news, bylaws, and public announcements loudly and clearly in town squares and market places. Their iconic cry of “Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!” signaled that important news was about to follow.

Today, while the role is no longer one of necessity, it remains an enduring and much-loved tradition. Modern Town Criers take part in ceremonial duties such as opening events, welcoming dignitaries, participating in parades and festivals, and helping to promote community pride and heritage.

Lydney Town Council is delighted to have Tim Enbom serving as our official Town Crier. With his distinctive voice, period costume, and warm enthusiasm, Tim brings history to life and adds a unique touch of pageantry to the life of our town. Whether ringing in a celebration or representing Lydney at civic events, Tim plays an important role in keeping this time-honoured custom alive.
